How To Clean Wood Outdoor Furniture?

How To Clean Wood Outdoor Furniture

Wood outdoor furniture adds warmth, character, and timeless style to any patio or backyard. Whether it's a dining set, lounge chairs, or a conversation set, regular cleaning helps preserve its beauty and extend its lifespan.

The good news is that cleaning most types of wood outdoor furniture is simple and doesn't require expensive products. With a little routine care, your furniture can stay in excellent condition season after season.

Why Regular Cleaning Matters?

Outdoor furniture is constantly exposed to dust, pollen, rain, bird droppings, tree sap, and UV rays. Over time, these elements can dull the wood's natural appearance and encourage mildew, especially in humid climates.

Cleaning your furniture every few months helps remove surface dirt before it becomes difficult to clean and keeps the wood looking fresh throughout the year.

What You'll Need

For most wood outdoor furniture, you only need a bucket of warm water, a mild dish soap, a soft sponge or microfiber cloth, and a soft-bristle brush for textured areas. Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, or pressure washers, as they can damage the wood fibers or protective finish.

Step 1: Remove Loose Dirt

Start by brushing away leaves, dust, and other debris. If necessary, rinse the furniture lightly with a garden hose to remove surface dirt before washing.

Step 2: Wash with Mild Soap

Mix a small amount of mild dish soap with warm water. Dip a soft cloth or sponge into the solution and gently wipe every surface of the furniture.

If you notice stubborn dirt in joints or wood grain, use a soft-bristle brush to clean those areas without scratching the surface.

Step 3: Rinse Thoroughly

After cleaning, rinse away any remaining soap with clean water. Soap residue left on the wood can attract dirt over time, so it's important to remove it completely.

Step 4: Let It Dry Naturally

Allow the furniture to air dry completely in a well-ventilated area before using it again or placing covers over it. Covering damp furniture can trap moisture and encourage mold or mildew.

Does Teak Require Different Cleaning?

Teak is a little different from most other outdoor woods because it naturally contains oils that protect it from moisture, insects, and decay.

For routine cleaning, however, the process is essentially the same as other wood furniture. Wash teak with mild soap, water, and a soft brush, then rinse and allow it to dry naturally.

The biggest difference comes after cleaning. New teak has a warm golden-brown color, but over time it naturally develops an elegant silver-gray patina when exposed to sunlight. This color change is completely normal and does not affect the wood's strength or durability.

If you prefer to maintain teak's original golden appearance, you can apply a teak protector after the furniture has dried. If you enjoy the weathered gray look, no additional treatment is necessary.

How Often Should You Clean Wood Outdoor Furniture?

For most climates, cleaning your wood furniture every two to three months is enough. During spring and summer, or if your furniture is located under trees or near a pool, monthly cleaning may be beneficial.

A deeper cleaning at the beginning and end of the outdoor season is also a good habit, especially before storing furniture for winter or covering it for long periods.

Cleaning wood outdoor furniture doesn't have to be complicated. A gentle wash with mild soap and water is all that's needed for routine maintenance, whether your furniture is made from teak, acacia, eucalyptus, or another hardwood.
